LASER ‘Research Skills for Academic Study’ is a small, Level 3 qualification. It is designed to develop the research skills needed for academic study at Level 3 and Level 4, such as planning one’s research, assessing the reliability of one’s sources and using one’s research to inform one’s writing.
The Level 3 Award in Research Skills is intended for students engaged or about to engage with Level 3 programmes of study, who need knowledge and understanding of how to undertake research, regardless of the subject area. The Award will enhance students’ Level 3 studies in mainstream subjects and prepare them for future Level 4 work.
This Award will help students to:
define the range and methods they need
assess the reliability of their sources
understand how to use researched material safely and effectively
understand referencing
Created as a result of provider feedback
Sufficiently flexible to be applied to any area of study
Can be delivered in personal tutor time as only a small qualification in size
Especially good for students wishing to go to university as it will increase their confidence and will offer them an edge over their university peers
Addresses skills that university admissions tutors say entrants lack
Could be run as a precursor to an Extended Project course to increase knowledge or to assist with a research proposal
Could be run as an alternative to an Extended Project
This qualification attracts 8 UCAS points
Registrations can be made at any time during the year
Evidence Log templates available.
* Universities and colleges set their own entry requirements and do not have to accept a qualification simply because it is included in the UCAS Tariff tables.
