At LASER, we transform lives through the recognition of learning and achievement. As an Ofqual-regulated awarding body and QAA-licensed Access Validating Agency, we are proud to support qualifications that equip learners with practical, confidence-boosting skills — and what better time to spotlight one of our most hands-on offerings than Bike Week 2025!

This Month’s Focus: Bike Maintenance

The Bike Maintenance units are part of the Learning, Employability and Progression (LEAP) suite of qualifications — a programme designed to build confidence, develop transferable skills, and support positive learner progression. These hands-on units directly reflect LEAP’s focus on practical learning and personal development, offering a powerful way to engage learners while building skills for life and work.

Bicycles are not only a sustainable method of transport — they’re also a vehicle for developing real-world skills. Our Bike Maintenance units offer learners the opportunity to get hands-on with practical tasks, from basic repairs to system checks. Delivered at Entry Level 3 and Level 1, these units help build independence, employability, and technical understanding.

Entry Level 3 Units Include:

  • Cleaning and Preparing a Cycle for Use

  • Lubricating and Tensioning a Single Speed Cycle Chain

  • Removing and Replacing Cycle Saddles and Seat Posts; Adjusting Handlebars

  • Removing and Replacing Cycle Wheels, Tyres and Inner Tubes

Level 1 Units Include:

  • Carrying Out a Systematic Cycle Check

  • Removing and Replacing a Cycle Rim Brake Assembly

  • Repairing a Cycle Puncture

These highly practical units are eligible for public funding (depending on which LEAP qualification is selected by the learner*) and they are designed to give learners a qualification they can take pride in — one that delivers genuine, transferable skills.

 * It is important that you check current eligibility directly with funding agencies. Please visit the Find A Learning Aim page on the gov.uk website for details.

What is LEAP?

The Learning, Employability and Progression (LEAP) suite is a flexible, practical programme offering a wide variety of personal development and vocational taster units. Designed to be adaptable, LEAP gives centres the autonomy to build programmes that suit the unique needs of their learners. Whether supporting progression to further education or employment, LEAP opens doors through skills-based learning.

Who is LEAP for?

LEAP is ideal for learners who benefit from a tailored, flexible curriculum. Whether young people seeking vocational taster experiences or adults re-engaging with learning, LEAP meets a wide range of needs.

What Qualifications Are Available?

At both Entry 3 and Level 1, seven qualification sizes are available — from small Awards to full Certificates. Thanks to a nested structure, smaller units can be built upon to achieve larger qualifications over time.

  • Awards (3 or 6 credits)

  • Certificates (15 to 37 credits)

  • Diplomas (37+ credits)

No core units are required, allowing maximum flexibility in course design.

How Can My Centre Deliver This Qualification?

Your organisation must be a recognised LASER centre to offer LEAP qualifications. If you're not yet approved, visit www.laser-awards.org.uk to find out how to become a centre or partner with an existing one. Recognised centres can begin delivery by completing a New Course/Programme Notification Form.
